About Mount Gravatt

The Terminus

The Brisbane suburb of Mount Gravatt is located approx ten kilometres south east of the Brisbane CBD. It has an approximate area of three squared kilometres and is surrounded by the surrounding suburbs of Holland Park, Holland Park West, Mount Gravatt East, Tarragindi, Nathan, and Upper Mount Gravatt.

Mount Gravatt is one part of the three suburbs which make up the Mount Gravatt district. The rest of the Mount Gravatt district is comprised of the suburbs Mount Gravatt East and Upper Mount Gravatt. The suburb of Mount Gravatt was named after Lieutenant George Gravatt who, in 1839, was the commandment of the Moreton Bay penal settlement. The Mount Gravatt suburb today has Logan Road running along its eastern boundary and the Pacific Motorway along its western boundary. It is also bordered by Nursery Road to the north.

Several major developments occurred over the years since Mount Gravatt was established which really made it into the suburb it is today. In 1874, Mount Gravatt State School was opened on Logan Road and is still there and operating today.

Until 1885 which was when the railways opened, Logan Road was the main route from Brisbane to the southern settlements like Beenleigh. When the Beenleigh railway line was opened, it took away a lot of traffic from Logan Road and therefore development along Logan Road was set back. Subsequently, Mount Gravatt was a rural suburb for several decades. Between the years of 1953 and 1969, Mount Gravatt was the end of the electric tram line that ran along Logan Road into the Brisbane CBD, and because of this, part of Mount Gravatt was known as ‘The Terminus’. Developments continued, including the opening of a high school, a library, a university, the showgrounds, and more. These developments pushed a population increase. Mount Gravatt went from having just over 200 residents in 1911 to over 3000 in 2011.
